Overview
Catholic social justice teachings are a collection of documents, encyclicals,
and synod statements that date back to 1891 with the issuance of Rerum Novarum
by Pope Leo XIII and continue up to the present day. In recent years, the bishops
of the United States published Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and
Directions, a document that focuses on seven major themes of Catholic Social Teaching.
The seven major themes of Catholic social teaching are as follows:
-
Life and Dignity of the Human Person
-
Call to family, Community, and Participation
-
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
-
Rights and Responsibilities of the Human Person
-
The Dignity of Work and the Rights of the Workers
-
Care for God's Creation
-
Solidarity of the Human Family
