CHAPTER 1:Jesus — the Way, the Truth, and the Life

In Chapter 1 the students learn that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. By following Jesus, the students learn that we grow closer to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Distribute the activity sheets. Ask a volunteer to read the directions aloud. Invite volunteers to talk about ways they have helped someone in need. Using the panel with the lines, guide the students to write about their experiences, and in the blank panel, attach a photo or make an illustration. If possible, display the completed pages as part of a bulletin board for possible parish community service projects.

CHAPTER 2:Jesus Leads Us to Happiness

In Chapter 2 the students learn Jesus taught the Beatitudes as a way to true happiness.
Distribute the activity sheets and read the directions aloud. Remind the students to use their We Believe texts to help them match each Key Word to its definition. Provide the students with the following colored crayons to find the hidden message contained in the puzzle: red, blue, purple, yellow, and green.

In Chapter 3 the students learn that God gives us freedom to choose to love and follow him. They also learn that choices that lead us away from God are called sins.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Guide the students to review the article about Saint John Vianney found in the Our Catholic Life feature of Chapter 3, before starting their genre paintings.

CHAPTER 4:Our Conscience, Our Guide

In Chapter 4 the students learn about conscience and the way it helps them make good choices and brings them closer to God and others.
Before beginning the activity, ask the students to talk about a book or movie that contains a character that uses his or her conscience to make a difficult decision. Then distribute the activity sheets, and read aloud the directions.

CHAPTER 5:Celebrating Penance and Reconciliation

In Chapter 5 the students learn about the peace and unity that comes from receiving God’s forgiveness and love through the sacrament of Reconciliation.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Point out the code on the right side of the page. Remind students to use the code to complete the sentences and to unscramble their circled letters at the bottom of the page.

CHAPTER 6:The Liturgical Year

In Chapter 6 the students learn that throughout the liturgical year, we remember and celebrate Jesus Christ.
Distribute the activity sheets, and read the directions aloud. Encourage the students to use their We Believe texts to help answer the clues to solve the crossword puzzle.

CHAPTER 7:Ordinary Time

In Chapter 7 the students learn that during the season of Ordinary Time, we celebrate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Distribute the activity sheets, and read the directions aloud. Allow time for students to complete the activity. If possible, gather together in the prayer space. Ask volunteers to read aloud their completed prayers. Close the prayer service by singing "We Believe, We Believe in God" found in the We Believe text and the We Believe Songbook.

CHAPTER 8:Learning About God's Law

In Chapter 8 the students learn about God’s covenant and the Ten Commandments.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. You may want to provide the students with some recipes from a magazine or cookbook to help them get started on their own “recipes” for living out what Jesus has showed us.

CHAPTER 9:The First Commandment

In Chapter 9 the students learn about ways we follow the First Commandment.
Distribute the activity sheets, and read the directions aloud. Ask a volunteer to read aloud the words to be found and circled in the puzzle. Remind the students to look for the hidden message that will be found once the puzzle is completed.

CHAPTER 10:The Second Commandment

In Chapter 10 the students learn about the Second Commandment and the respect and honor due to God’s name.
Distribute the activity sheets, and read the directions aloud. Encourage the students to use their We Believe texts if they have difficulty unscrambling the tiles for the titles of God.

CHAPTER 11:The Third Commandment  

In Chapter 11 the students learn about the third commandment.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Remind the students to use their We Believe texts to find a listing of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Encourage them to choose at least two Works of Mercy to do next Sunday.

In Chapter 12 the students learn about the celebration of the Mass.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Encourage the students to review the parts of the Mass in their We Believe texts before beginning the activity. Invite volunteers to share their completed webs.

CHAPTER 13: Advent 

In Chapter 13 the students learn that the season of Advent prepares us for the coming of the Lord.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Display for the students a sample e-greeting on the computer or print a copy of one. Encourage the students to use their We Believe text, parish missal, and the Bible to find quotes and information about Advent. If possible, assist the students in scanning their e-greetings on the computer to be emailed to family or friends.

CHAPTER 14: Christmas 

In Chapter 14 the students learn that during the Christmas season, we celebrate the Son of God’s coming into the world. Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Before beginning the activity encourage the students to brainstorm a list of ways that they can be a light for others. Provide students with markers, crayons, glitter, and glue to decorate their stars.

CHAPTER 15:The Fourth Commandment

In Chapter 15 the students learn that the fourth commandment teaches us to respect and honor our parents, guardians, and all people in authority.

Distribute the activity sheets. Ask a volunteer to read the directions aloud. As a group, discuss the fourth commandment and what it means to live out the fourth commandment. If possible, provide examples of comic strips from newspapers and magazines for students to use as a model for style. Encourage them to use their We Believe texts to help them gather information for subject matter.

CHAPTER 16: The Fifth Commandment

In Chapter 16 the students learn what it means to live out the fifth commandment by respecting all human life. Divide the students into small groups. Provide each group with a bumper sticker. Ask the groups to talk about their bumper sticker and identify its message. Then have the groups present their findings to the class. Encourage the students to be creative with their fifth commandment bumper sticker designs. Display the students’ work in the form of a bulletin board, or display the bumper stickers on doors, walls, and windows throughout the building.

CHAPTER 17: The Sixth Commandment

In Chapter 17 the students learn about the sixth commandment and the ways we show and love with others. If you have not already done so, read aloud the Chapter Story to the students. Discuss the question at the end of the story. Then, ask the students to brainstorm a list of the qualities that they look for in a friend. Distribute the activity sheet, and read the directions aloud. Provide assistance to the students as needed. If possible, ask volunteers to share their stories.

CHAPTER 18: The Seventh Commandment

In Chapter 18 the students learn that the seventh commandment calls us to live out the peace and justice of Jesus Christ.
Distribute the activity sheets. Ask a volunteer to read the directions aloud. Encourage the students to use their We Believe texts to complete the statement about the seventh commandment. Then have the students work in pairs to complete the activity. If possible, ask for volunteers to dramatize their skits.

Answer: The seventh commandment calls us to:

  • care for the gifts of creation
  • care for the things that belong to us and respect what belongs to others 
  • not take things that are not ours
  • show respect for the goods and property of others
  • work to help all people share the gifts of the earth.

CHAPTER 19: The Eighth Commandment

In Chapter 19 the students learn that the eighth commandment teaches the importance of learning and living the truth that comes from God.
Distribute the activity sheet and read the directions aloud. Encourage students to use their We Believe texts to help them solve the crossword puzzle.

CHAPTER 20: Lent

In Chapter 20 the children learn that Lent is the season of preparation for Easter.
Before beginning the activity, talk about the season of Lent. Have students brainstorm a list of some Lenten activities that their family and/or parish practices during the season of Lent. Then, distribute the activity sheets and read the directions aloud. Remind the students to write one idea for Lent on each face of the cube before cutting and assembling the cube. Provide students with scissors and paste or tape to fasten the sides of the cube.

During the season of Lent, encourage the students to use their cubes daily or weekly to “live out Lent.”

CHAPTER 21: Triduum

In Chapter 21 the students learn that the Easter Triduum celebrates the joy of the cross.
Distribute the activity sheets. Read the directions aloud. Point out the code on the right side of the page. Remind students to use the code to complete the sentences and to unscramble the circled letters at the bottom of the page. Encourage the students to use their We Believe texts to check their answers.

Answers:
1. Triduum is a Latin word that means three days.

2. The Easter Triduum begins on Holy Thursday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday.

3. On Holy Thursday we remember what happened at the Last Supper, remember the example of service Jesus gave by washing his disciples’ feet, and have a special collection for those in need.

3. On Good Friday, the Church remembers the death of Jesus on the cross.

4. On Holy Saturday we gather with our parish at night for the Easter Vigil.

CHAPTER 22: The Ninth Commandment

In Chapter 22 the students learn that by following the ninth commandment we can live out the virtue of modesty.

Before beginning the activity, you may want to allow students to choose a partner or to form small groups for the activity. Distribute the activity sheets and read the directions aloud. Allow time for students to complete the activity. If time permits, invite volunteers to dramatize their top ten lists.

CHAPTER 23: The Tenth Commandment

In Chapter 23 the students learn that our hearts are to be filled with love and generosity, not with envy or greed.

Before beginning the activity, write the word slogan. Ask: What is a slogan? What are some examples of slogans? In what forms can slogans be found? Then write the following Scripture quotation on the chalkboard, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts of the Apostles 20:35) Ask a volunteer to read the quotation aloud. Begin a discussion by asking the following questions: What is the message of this Scripture quotation? How does this Scripture quotation relate to the tenth commandment?

Then, distribute the activity sheets and read the directions aloud. Ask volunteers to identity the “signs” on the activity sheet that are available for slogans. Encourage the students to be creative. If possible, display the completed activity sheets in the form of a bulletin board, or use the activity sheets as a starting point for students to design their own “mini city” that promotes living out the tenth commandment.

CHAPTER 24: We Grow in Holiness

In Chapter 24 the students learn that we grow in holiness through prayer, the sacraments, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Before beginning the activity, ask the students to explain ways that we can grow in holiness. List the responses on the chalkboard or a sheet of poster board. Then ask the students to think about people that share God’s goodness with others.

Distribute the activity sheets. Invite a volunteer to read the directions aloud. Encourage the students to use their We Believe text to help complete the first column of the chart. Remind the students to include someone that they know when they complete the second column of the chart. If possible, allow time for students to share their responses.

CHAPTER 25: We Are the Church

In Chapter 25 the students will reflect on what it means to be an active member of a parish community and, in a more universal sense, a member of the worldwide Catholic Church.

Distribute the activity sheets and read the directions aloud. Encourage the students use their We Believe text to help find the definition of each Key Word found in Chapter 25. Allow time for the students to prepare the Key Word cards and play the game. If possible, extend the activity by making similar cards for all of the Key Words in the We Believe text. You can play the Key Word Shuffle with all of the Key Words as an end of the year review.

CHAPTER 26: We Are Called to Discipleship

In Chapter 26 the students learn about the theological and cardinal virtues and come to see that everyone is called to be a disciple.

Write the following prayer on the chalkboard or sheet of poster board:

Lord Jesus, you have given us a model to follow.

As a class, reflect on these words and on your time together this year. One at a time, invite each student to add a line for the prayer and write it on the chalkboard or the sheet of poster board. Ask volunteers to help make a master copy of the class prayer. (The master copy should be reproduced for each student.) Use the class prayer in an “end-of-the-year” prayer service. Distribute the activity sheets. Ask a volunteer to read the directions aloud. Allow time for the students to complete the activity.
