(Sharing Faith with My Family, Chapter 1 Family Page)
In this first unit of the year, the children will be led to understand that
Jesus, through his divinity and humanity, teaches us about God's love. The
children will recognize that God created the world and everything in
it-including them. They will grow in their understanding of the
Blessed Trinity.
By knowing more about Jesus' family life, the children will become
more aware of the blessing of their own families. The last two chapters of
the unit focus on Jesus' ministry and teachings. The children begin to see
that by his actions of love, mercy and healing, Jesus teaches that God
watches over and cares for each of us. The unit concludes with an appreciation
of the meaning of Jesus' Great Commandment.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 2
Unit 2 introduces the children to a history of the
Church that culminates
with how the Church cares for us today. The children will learn that Jesus
attracted many followers. Jesus taught his followers many things. One
teaching concerned how we are to pray. The meaning of the
Lord's Prayer is
explained to the children. Continuing the story of the Church, Unit 2
presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The events surrounding Jesus' death
and Resurrection are presented in ways that first graders can handle. The
coming of the Holy Spirit at
Pentecost
begins the history of the Church.
The children will understand that the Holy Spirit helped the Church to grow
in its early days and continues to help the Church today through the
leadership of the pope and the bishops.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 3
In Unit 3, the children will learn to be more appreciative that they are
members who belong to the Church. The parish is presented as a family of
believers who help each other and all people. One way members can be
strengthened in their faith in God is through the sacraments. The children
will learn the meaning of a
sacrament
and will be able to name the seven
sacraments. The sacrament of Baptism is highlighted for the first graders.
As followers of Jesus, the children will grow in their understanding of
Jesus' message of peace and forgiveness.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 4
Unit 4, the last unit of the year, celebrates the ways we can live out
our faith in Jesus Christ. The meaning and order of the
Mass and the
celebration of the Eucharist are explained in terms first graders can
understand and accept. After this presentation, the children will grow
in their commitment to live out the Mass at home with your family. One
way to enrich our experience of faith is to honor Mary, the Mother of God,
and all the saints.
The children will pray the Hail Mary as well as becoming
aware of the ways the Church honors the saints. The last chapter of
Unit 4 calls on the children to become more aware of our role as caretakers
of God's creation. As we care for all of God's people, the children feel
the Church commitment to welcome everyone.
